|a3 Rue St Jacques Bruges {<=Rev'd>[=Reverend]} and dear Sir - I am glad to say I am better to day - but yesterday I was very very ill - I do not know where the Children will be placed but I should be very sorry for them to leave without your seeing them & I am sure they would be equally sorry - so I hope you will run up - they would have been delighted to have been under your jurisdiction but as you are not superior what can we do - By the bye I should greatly like to know who is Superior of your College whether it is a Bona Fide Flesh and Blood individual or only a Myth - New Establishments always labour under great disad- vantages - They are less able to take pupils upon moderate Terms - & that is the only inducement (with the exception of private friendship) that would induce people to place their children at them Am I not correct in my judgement? - For instance if you have 10 or 20 Pupils under your care & Mr Algars - in a private House you cannot separate them according to age & in the event of illness - there is no infirmary or person specially appropriated to watch over the sick - You or Mr Algar may be taken seriously ill, & then the Children would be seriously at a disadvantage - There is nothing like a regular College with a visible head. Under all those circumstances, I think had my children been placed at your College I should have been conferring rather than receiving a favour - but however that is of no consequence now - Mr Algar seemed dissatisfied with the Terms I had been paying and I should not have strained a point to have placed them at a new Establishment - I dont think I shall take them to England at present but how it will be settled I do not know - Come up if you can & let us talk over the relative merits of Jesuits Benedictines Seculars &c &c - - With best respects Yours very Truly in {<=Xt>[=Christ]} Jemima Hazeland |
